National MS Society Uses Transcripts to Teach
About Disease

Multiple Sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system, affects 400,000 Americans, according the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. More than 200 Americans are diagnosed with MS each week.

To help those hurt by the often devastating effects of MS, the Society ( http://www.nmss.org ) was formed with a mission of "mobilizing people and resources to drive research and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS."

John Aden, manager of program development with NMSS, makes use of the transcription services from TScribe to help produce materials that teach people about MS.

"They're mainly educational videos, talking about MS, educating people about it. The target audience is generally people with MS, their families, and caregivers," says Aden. The videos are available for viewing on the organization's website.

Transcripts are produced from videos of interviews with those suffering from MS and others affected by the disease. The transcripts, says, Aden, "are a time-saver" when it comes time to edit the raw footage into a final product. He says transcripts are "an easy way of sharing the editing process with various people. My colleague will send me some highlighted portion of the transcripts, and I can whittle it down into what I think might work as a rough cut."

Aden says transcripts help lower costs incurred during the editing process. "We're charged by the hour for the time we spend in the editing room,” he says. “Being able to go in knowing what I want in terms of specific quotes and sound bites saves us money by reducing the amount of time we're in the editing room.” Working with TScribe, Aden says, is "easy, intuitive -- you upload the MP3 files on the site, and three days later, you get a Word document. It's pretty simple and reliable, and the quality of the product is great." He's also pleased with TScribe's invoicing, which he says is straightforward and easy to understand.
